Unicorn

Unicorns are rare and solitary creatures. Although they look similar to white horses, the single horn on their foreheads and their cloven hooves prove otherwise. They are also more delicate in their appearance and usually are slightly smaller than their hoofed relatives. Unicorns can usually be found in Sylvan groves or elven communities. These creatures are usually peaceful, and offer friendly advice to those who ask.

Unlike other species, unicorns are not born. Instead, they are created. A horse which spends most of its time near a source of sylvan energies eventually absorbs those energies. Over a period of years, the horse’s coat will bleach white, a horn will begin to grow from its skull, and its hooves become cloven. In its final stages of transformation, a young unicorn acquires the ability to speak. Unicorns are therefore technically classified as fey creatures.

However, the unicorn can undergo another transformation. If it comes in contact with corrupted Sylvan energies, or if it joins the side of Rabio, its coat and horn will eventually turn black. Its eyes, instead of blue, will take on a reddish hue.

Male and female unicorns can be told apart by the goat-like beard that usually appears on the chin of the males. Although unicorns are made, it is possible for a male and female unicorn to breed. However, their offspring take the form of a regular foal rather than the more mystical unicorn.

Unicorns possess many magical abilities. They are able to purify poisoned water by simply dipping their horn into the tainted spring. For this reason, the horn is prized within the black market. Known as the “alicorn,” this horn can be crushed into powder which can be used in potions that can counteract poisons and prevent disease. In order to test if an alicorn is genuine, the powder from the horn should be arranged into a circle. A spider should then be placed in the center. If the spider is unable to leave the circle of powdered alicorn, it’s almost a sure sign that it is truly a unicorn’s horn.

Unicorns also are one of the fastest creatures alive. For this reason, they are coveted as mounts by many. They even pull the chariot of the god, Eneil. However, most unicorns take a bit of persuading. Unicorns are able to reach such breathtaking speeds due to their ability to hover a few inches above the ground when they begin to run. This ability allows them to reduce friction and therefore reach speeds unmatched by lesser creatures.
